During an expedition Base Camp become the mountaineers home base. It's a refuge and offers safety, it's as close as possible to home. Fabrizio Spaziani, , the expedition doctor, talks about the daily pasta which makes the members feel at home and gives them the strength, both morally and physically.
K2 Base Camp
We've been away from home for more than a month. Apart from a few photos or some personal belongings, we've really got very little to feel, at least for a moment, at home. However, these "little things" grow in value day to day and become increasingly indispensable.
Our pasta is one of those things that makes us feel at home. It isn't always cooked al dente, but here these things don't matter that much and, unlike other dishes, a good plate of pasta is always appreciated. Tomato sauce, garlic and oil or simply with vegetables no matter what the sauce is, its always desired and longed for. After the first few bites our mood changes and after three or four further forkfuls we begin to talk, tell jokes and laugh. It's a panacea for us. Before the ascent we eat plenty to stock our energy reserves (glycogen). And when we return, apart from replenishing our exhausted bodies, its taste satisfies the palate which, during the ascent days, has had to make do with energy bars, soup or mashed potatoes.
In short, our pasta is a great present, with which we relive a small bit of "Italian life" which we miss, every day a little bit more.

A weak ridge is situated over Afghanistan. It may at times affect the K2-area during the first days giving only risk of occasional showers. Then it seems to become more unsettled with frequent showers due to lows over Kashmir and Tibet.
