Wind and unstable weather on K2
The wait continues for the Scoiattoli: unstable weather and above all extremely strong gusts of wind force the expedition to continue waiting in Base Camp
Thursday 22 July, Base Camp K2
The weather is extremely unstable, with only a few sunny spells and intense gusts of wind and snow (see photo). because of thsi the Scoiattoli have decided not to climb the mountain today. Heavy snowfall has not been forecast but the wind will pick up and at altitude this will cause considerable problems. Here at K2 BC there are about 15 expeditions, and therefore about 150 mountaineers. Of these, only some members of the Italian expedition led by Agostino Da Polenza and a few courageous mountaineers are currently engaged on the mountain.

These weather conditions mean a nerve wracking wait in BC, and everyone tries to pass the time as best possible: someone fixes a tent, some eat a final few delicacies, while others, like me or Marco Anghileri, spend time in front of the computer...it's not easy! The weather forecast for tomorrow isn't great, but who knows what K2 holds in store, who knows, perhaps the 31st of July, anniversary day?

Speak to you tomorrow with an update.

WEATHER
27-07-2004
A weak ridge is situated over Afghanistan. It may at times affect the K2-area during the first days giving only risk of occasional showers. Then it seems to become more unsettled with frequent showers due to lows over Kashmir and Tibet.
